At McKim House, assistants come to share life in community: that is, to share daily life with the other members of the home – people with and without intellectual disabilities – in the context of a community that also involves friends, volunteers, and associate members. Daily life at McKim House includes the activities of cooking, cleaning, and laundry; meetings and times of prayer; and supporting those with disabilities in all areas of their life, as needed – both at home and out in the broader community.

Assistants come with some training and experience, and will develop new skills and deeper understanding throughout their time here. L’Arche Saint John is an ecumenical Christian community that welcomes assistants from a broad range of backgrounds. We seek people open to learning and growing, meeting new challenges, discovering their own and others’ gifts, and being transformed by sometimes unexpected friendships.

Remuneration, benefits, days away and vacation time are provided.

For more information, and to apply online, visit L'Arche Canada's recruitment website! We apologize, but only applications processed online will be considered.

Summer Assistant Opportunity via Student Employment Experience Development (SEED)

Are you looking for a great summer job? The student assistant will assist full-time staff to support the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of adults with intellectual disabilities ("core members"). He or she will help the core members, as needed, with their morning and daily activities, e.g. driving people to work, preparing meals, cleaning the house, doing laundry, etc. They will contribute to team meetings, and support core members in their personal goals (e.g. walking, exercising at the Y, volunteer, developing social skills, going for coffee, using social media, etc). The summer assistant will participate in L'Arche community meetings and special events; helping to organize outings (to the beach, the Nature Park, out for ice cream) and to plan celebrations such as birthday parties. He or she will assist the core members with communication and understanding, to promote a welcoming atmosphere in our home and creative arts space, Creative Connections. Hours of work are flexible: Monday-Friday with the occasional Saturday. Please contact Brandon at Brandon@larchesaintjohn.org for more information.
